Pyles Mag

About

Pyles came from a personal endeavor to start self publishing poems and photographs as short zines. These first publications were written and released under the pseudonym Miyles Briggs, printed in black and white on copy paper. I wanted to be sneaky and silly about writing my poetry and showing my photography, so I left zines in random places around the city as I wandered it. In restaurants, book stores, coffee shops, and in old magazine stands.

I realized along the way that I didn't want to be sneaky. I wanted to have a community surrounding my art process, surrounding my art. I wanted to talk and collaborate with the creative process, get inspired by what other people were doing. I wanted to have people around me during the struggles and celebrations. Those who were along the path with me looking for the same things.

I realized that I couldn't find a space like that out in the open. Art galleries seemed too formal for me. I wanted to go deeper into the struggles of self actualization and spirit through art. I wanted to have conversations in intimate, yet nonexclusive spaces. With strangers and friends. So I turned my little zine idea into a community idea. Starting with my first art show in my own home, everyone and anyone were invited to showcase artworks. And then a second art show in my own home. I talked about making a magazine all the time and it finally clicked when I was talking about it with Alex, our Graphic Designer. He told me “Fuck it, lets do it.” So we got to work on creating a magazine, starting with the essence of our mission. The rest is in our pages and at our events. It manifested into real life, face to face shit where we began to see community sprouting.

Now we are here on our second issue. Inviting you for more. We want to see your shit. We want to collaborate. We want to build this collective, with you. So fucking hit us up, chat with us, tell us your dreams and lets make some shit happen.
